Gas prices have almost doubled in Massachusetts. Prices have been as high as $4.46. However, one year ago, the average price of gas was 37% lower at $2.92 a gallon. Globally, the average price is $5.58 per gallon.
Gas prices are rising due to the war with Iran. Since the US declared war, gas prices shot up by 50% as the global supply is limited. The war caused a global energy crisis, causing us to have to pay more money at the pump. The director of the International Energy Agency called this, “the largest energy crisis in history.” Worldwide oil supply is reduced due to the fact that the critical Strait of Hormuz artery was blocked since the beginning of the U.S. and Iran war. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said he is “avoiding” price predictions as gas prices continue to skyrocket.
The average cost of gas around the world is $4.58, with the cost of oil rising to above $95 per barrel. Comparing gas prices from the 1950’s to present time, there is obviously a major difference. Back in the 1950’s, gas was $0.27 a gallon, now in 2026, it is almost a whopping $5. The average amount of gallons to fill a car is 12-16, meaning that back in the 50’s, the overall price of gas was $3.78 to fill a 14 gallon tank. That is not even the price per gallon in 2026. To fill a 14 gallon tank in 2026 in Massachusetts is $62.44. That is an increase of approximately 1552% in 76 years.
It is unknown if prices will continue to rise or will eventually drop, so all we can do is hope for a resolution to this crisis.
