Women’s History Month originated in 1978 as “Women’s History Week” in Santa Rosa, California, organized by the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women to align with International Women’s Day. The celebration gained national attention, leading President Jimmy Carter to proclaim the first National Women’s History Week in 1980. In 1987, Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month, which has been recognized annually since. The National Women’s History Alliance selects the yearly theme, with 2025’s theme being “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”
