The summer movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru, was released to theaters Friday, July 1st, 2022. It is a long-anticipated arrival that had been moved from 2020 due to COVID and finally, was released this year. Minions: The Rise of Gru is the fifth movie in the Despicable Me series. This includes the three Despicable Me movies as well as both of the Minions movies. The story takes place in the 1970s and we follow the young main character, Gru. The audience views his beginnings and how he becomes the depicted character in Despicable Me.

With the release, not only children but Generation Z was excited to see the new movie. Lines of young men would go to the theater wearing suits or nice clothing to watch the Illuminations film. It was a spontaneous reaction that created a trend that started going viral on social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat. This trend became so popular that theaters began kicking out or banning people from wearing suits.

The film itself was rated very average. It scored a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes and the film received 920.6 million dollars at the box office. Many people find the plot forgettable, though it is full of comedy which appeals to a younger audience. The animation has come a long way from the first movie; it is colorful, smooth, and full of depth. And the movie is a perfect fit for the series. If you enjoy Despicable Me, Minions, or just silly animated movies, you will enjoy this film.
