This Old Dog is the third studio album from Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco. Released on May 5, 2017, This Old Dog was met with numerous positive reviews and peaked at number 1 in the U.S. Independent Albums (billboard), and number 29 on the U.S. Billboard 200. This album is out of the ordinary for DeMarco, as it takes a serious tone, discussing love, change, and growing up. Despite its seriousness, however, DeMarco reminds the listener to not take it too literally. This album also tackles DeMarco’s relationship with his father, who he describes as, “a very funny man – very charismatic guy – but, at the same time, an addict and a lot of not so great stuff.” This can be seen blatantly on the track “Watching Him Fade Away,” where, although DeMarco never really knew his father, he claims that it still hurt to watch him fade away, in reference to his recent cancer diagnosis. Overall, this album is filled with incredible songs that constantly catch you off guard with their solemnity, and at times, their silliness. I would recommend this album to anyone who hasn’t listened to it before, and I would give it a ten out of ten.
My top tracks:
- Still Beating.
- Moonlight on the River.
- One More Love Song.
