Ticketmaster Department of Justice Investigation

Charlotte Weiskotten, Senior Editor-in-Chief

In early November, Ticketmaster began a presale for Taylor Swift’s upcoming Eras tour. The platform was flooded with buyers, causing site failures and fans to lose tickets they had already claimed for purchase. Ticketmaster subsequently received mass criticism, which drew attention to an ongoing investigation into the organization and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment. The investigation began this summer and aimed to determine whether the media giant uses its size to bump out the competition and claim a monopoly on the live music industry. The majority of the investigation deals with anti-competitive policies and contracts. These terms can pose obstacles for artists seeking another promotion or sales platform. Although charges are unlikely to be pursued at present, legal maneuvers in the future may aim to divide Ticketmaster into smaller parts. Until then, the investigation is ongoing.
