Hocus Pocus 2

Hocus Pocus, one of the most classic Halloween movies made in 1993, has recently come back for a sequel, Hocus Pocus 2. Both movies take place in Salem, Massachusetts, and are defined as fantasy-comedy. Winifred, Sarah, and Mary are the spooky Sanderson sisters who are witches and grew up in the 1640s and 50s. They became orphans after their loving father suddenly passed. They lived in a small village with many enemies. Their ultimate goal was to haunt kids in Salem forever.

Hocus Pocus 2 starts off taking place in Salem in the year 1653. The viewers learn about the Sanderson sisters and why they were banished from their village and how they become young witches. As the movie progresses, it jumps to Salem in modern-day 2022. It is October 31st as well as Becca’s 16th birthday, and she is gifted the black flame candle from her local witch shop. She takes the candle into the woods and lights it with her friend, Izzy, causing the Sanderson sisters to return to Salem until sunrise.

Becca and Izzy did not know that the candle was the black flame candle as they were tricked into taking it from Gilbert. Gilbert has always been obsessed with the Sanderson sisters and wanted them to return to Salem ever since he saw them flying on their broomsticks as a kid in 1993.

This movie is a joy to watch. It is a comedy as well as a musical. I enjoyed watching the Sanderson sisters adjust to the modern day after being gone for twenty-nine years. However, I felt as though the movie was rushed. Becca, one of the main characters, is given witch powers on her birthday and a witch usually gets her powers at the age of 16. It does not make sense as to why Becca becomes a witch. There is no explanation as to how or why Becca is granted these powers. I am also not a big fan of musicals as it makes the movie seem totally unrealistic. As the Sanderson sisters were being summoned to Salem, they sang a song, “The Witches Are Back” and it threw me off.

At the end of the movie, Winifred has to give up her sisters, which are everything to her, in order to become one of the most powerful witches to ever walk Earth. After, Winifred realizes all of the power in the world meant nothing to her if she could not share her reign with her sisters. All of the viewers saw a side of Winifred that has never been revealed. She actually has feelings and she cares. She will do anything to stay with her sisters, which is why she became a witch in the first place. Ultimately, it was a great ending to the sequel.
