If you haven’t been to a Nordic Ski race before, this is the perfect time too. If you want to see some action, get to a Nordic Ski race. These races are filled with excitement, fun, and teamwork and is a great sport to watch and be involved in. The boys and girls teams have been tremendous so far and they keep proving it every single day with more improvement, effort and dedication to the sport. These teams may be in the run for a state title.
The girls’s team has been great so far. While they aren’t the biggest group, they have the heart. This team has had some amazing races and they only are proving to be better. Captains Vienna Mahar, and Lilliana Penna-Ward lead the girls team and showcase their superb effort. The first two races of the season have been skate races and both have been up at Prospect Mountain in Vermont. The first race, the girls didn’t have their best racer Vienna Mahar, but other racers stepped up. Megan Tucker led the team with a 12th place finish in the girl’s varsity race with her other teammates trailing right behind. The team didn’t score well, only getting 5th of the girls teams but a good first race. In the second race, the team pushed harder though, it was a much longer course but they were ready. Vienna Mahar placed first in this race by a mere 4 seconds! Megan Tucker and Lilliana Penna-Ward finished in 22nd and 25th to help the team get 5th place once again. The girls team has a lot of young talent and in a couple years, they will be ready for any team.
On the boys side, they have had a crazy year so far.
Led by Captains, Fritz Sanders, Cadighan Gladu, and Colby Robb, this team has been busting in and out of practice. This team has a lot of new guys and veterans too and will be good for years to come. In the first race, the boys finished 2nd with 25 points behind Mount Greylock’s 20. Fritz took first with Owen Tucker, Cadighan Gladu and Colby Robb finishing close behind with 5th, 9th and 10th place finishes. It was looking like this was going to be a trend all season and so far, it is. In their second matchup, Wahconah had an even better race. Fritz took 1st for the second time again with Owen Tucker taking 4th and Chaz Mahar also taking 6th which put Wahconah with five skiers in the top 10. This gave Wahconah a tremendous victory over Mount Greylock with 20 points to their 25. This is something that hadn’t been done since the late 90s and early 2000s. Something this boys team should be proud of and something they have to use and continue to do.
For both teams they have been great and this is a year where something magical can happen. Wahconah has good ski teams and they are ready for any challenge. ROLL CONAH!
