Another year of Wahconah football has come upon us and its seeming to become a storybook year. Wahconah has been known for winning but after a shaky 5-5 season last year, they are looking to change the scripts. The Warriors are led by their massive senior class and captains Owen Brennan, Landon Corcoran, West Dews and Daniel Sargent. This group put in a lot of work during the off-season and it’s been shaping up to be a season for them to remember.
The season began at home against the South Hadley Tigers, which was a statement victory for them last season. Once again, Wahconah blew through them, winning 26-6 with running back West Dews leading the team to a great start. The Warriors were then faced with one of their first challenges of the season, the Hoosac Hurricanes. This rivalry has been a battle for the ages but as of recently, these teams haven’t faced each other, so this year’s game was bound to be a good one. The game was a massive battle with both teams going back and forth making plays and stopping the other team from scoring. With just two minutes to go, the Hurricanes were driving down the field but the Warriors had a different idea and stopped them a few times at the goal line to go on and win a huge game 22-18.
The Warriors were 2-0 and looking for more, but a challenge came that the Warriors were not prepared for. The Pittsfield Generals were looking to stay undefeated as well and this being the Berkshire County championship made the stakes even higher. The Warriors took a big loss and were now 2-1. Next, they faced the Amherst Hurricanes, a team that upset the Warriors last year and was looking to do it again. The Warriors fought and they had the toughness, but they made mistakes and allowed costly scores that led to Amherst beating them 22-40. The Warriors on a 2-2 record were starting to decline and they were not used to this. The Warriors fortunately fight no matter what, and because of the bond this team has, they are together through everything.
Agawam was next and the Warriors were ready for a battle they needed to win. They played tough and together which allowed them to seal a massive victory over a recent rival, winning 54-18. This now has put Wahconah into the D7 state playoffs as the 11th seed. But with three games left, anything can happen. They next face the West Springfield Terriers who are 5-0 and looking to breeze by the Warriors like last year. But if the Warriors stay tough, together, and fight, they may be able to change the script and keep their season alive.
