Wicked has enchanted its audience ever since its first debut. The show beautifully retells the story behind the witches of Oz, focusing on the relationship between Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (The Good Witch). With its captivating story line, stunning visuals, and powerful musical numbers, Wicked continues to be a must-see on Broadway.
The story follows Elphaba, a misunderstood green-skinned girl with a strong sense of justice, and Glinda, a bubbly, popular student at Shiz Academy. Their very contrasting personalities lead to a complicated friendship as they navigate through societal expectations.
The performances are a standard aspect of Wicked, the chemistry between the two lead characters is electric, with Elphaba delivering the show-stopping number “Defying Gravity” with unmatched power and emotion, and shining “Popular” showing the playful yet poignant take on the pressures to fit in at Shiz.
The score composed by Steven Schwartz, is memorable and emotionally resonant with audience members. Songs such as “For Good” and “The Wizard and I” show the characters’ growth and the impact they have on each other’s lives. The blend of melodies and lyrics is what keeps the audience engaged, and many songs resonate with the audience as the curtain falls.
Visually, Wicked is a feast for the human eyes. The set design brings the Land of Oz to life, from the vibrant colors of Shiz Academy to the very green Emerald City. The costumes are equally as expressive, Elphaba’s iconic black ensemble and Glinda’s sparkling gowns, convey their personalities.
Overall, Wicked is a beautiful and remarkable production that combines a powerful story with an exceptional performance, beautiful costumes, and stunning music. The show can resonate with audiences of all ages, inviting them to reflect on their own beliefs about friendship and the challenges of growing up. For anyone that goes and sees the show, I guarantee you that it will forever leave a lasting impression. Whether you are a fan of musicals or new to the genre. This show cannot be missed.
