“I don’t ever gamble on the weather.” (“Wings” – 2018) Mac Miller’s 2018 album Swimming is an album redolent of the L.A. alternative soul genre. Continuing his 2016 album The Divine Feminine, an album with multiple features and the main theme being his break-up with American pop singer Ariana Grande. Swimming is Mac Miller’s last studio album as of September 7th 2018, Miller died of an accidental drug overdose. The Independent states that Mac Miller used Swimming as an album to talk about his mental health struggles and pits he found himself in. The standout song on this album for me, “Wings,” talks about Miller’s acceptance of his mistakes and learning how to move on from darker moments in his life. This song teaches the listener the acceptance of oneself and how to move forward. The entire album holds common motifs of change and passage. Mac Miller is an honored rapper and musician from the past couple of decades, Swimming is my favorite work of his, and the album that stands out to me the most.
