The Eraser by Thom Yorke

Music With Matty

The Eraser, released in 2006 by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, is a phenomenal piece of artwork that dynamically combines dark dystopian beats and beautiful lyricism. Every song transported me into the world of The Eraser and held me there for forty-one minutes and two seconds. It’s hard to pick just a few songs to describe the overall feel of the album but here are some of my favorite tracks: Title track, “The Eraser,” “Black Swan,” and “And it Rained All Night.” The title track does a fantastic job of setting up how the rest of the album will follow. Entering with an echo-y piano sound and then adding a complementary backing beat; when the vocals hit the whole song begins to come together. My favorite part of the song is towards the end when the music begins to fade out but the vocals continue, and then stop as the music comes back in to fade out, ending of the song. It lets you down gently, like getting off a hot air balloon ride. “Black Swan” has a hypnotic bass line that pulls the listener into the song as soon as it starts. The drums, when added, only serve to complement the groovy bass and add to the atmosphere of the song. It’s solid all the way through, very immersive and guaranteed to get stuck in your head. The last song I want to talk about is “And it Rained All Night.” This was immediately my favorite song off the record. The waning synth throughout the song ties together the mechanical bass sounds and the onomatopoeia in the lyrics. You can really get lost in the sauce.

But my description doesn’t do the album justice. I highly recommend listening to it on your own and forming your own opinion on Thom York’s The Eraser. This albums worth it, 9.4/10.
