Easter Time in Different Religions

Hannah Burrows, StaffWriter

Colorful plastic eggs, sweet candy, the springing of new life. Those are just some of the traditional elements of Easter- in the United States at least. The Christian holiday known as Easter has been around since the 2nd century and is celebrated all over the world. Surprisingly enough, Christians aren’t the only religious people that celebrate a holiday around this time. For example, Judaism celebrates Passover and Islam celebrates Ramadan.

The Jewish holiday of Passover celebrates the story of the Israelites when they escaped from slavery in Egypt. This holiday occurs on the 15th day of the Hebrew month known as Nisan. Passover is celebrated by retelling the story of the escape, drinking wine, eating symbolic food, and celebrating freedom.

Another holiday celebrated around this time is the Islamic holiday, Ramadan. Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is celebrated all month long. This holiday is celebrated by fasting, praying, and reflection within the community.

For the second year in a row, all three holidays will take place during the same weekend.
