“The Last of Us” Review
April 11, 2023
Everyone is now talking about the new HBO Max series The Last of Us, created by the co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. This series is based on the video game series of the same title created by Jacob Minkoff. This series stars Pedro Pascal who plays Joel, and Bella Ramsey who plays Ellie, the two main characters of the series, which the story follows.
The Last of Us series is set in an apocalypse, dystopian society that was caused by a fungal infection outbreak. The show starts with Joel and his life before the apocalypse, he lives with his brother and daughter Sarah. The outbreak occurs and Joel loses too much at once, not by the infected themselves, but by his own race, by humans. The show then fast forwards twenty years in the future and we see society crumble, people who aren’t infected barely survive under the current government and society.
Joel needs resources to go on a rescue mission, and Ellie is later introduced to need the help of Joel to get smuggled out of the town they live in for the chance of being able to save the world. As the story progresses we see a father-daughter relationship develop between the two making the audience fall in love with the characters and chemistry between Pedro Pascal, and Bella Ramsey.
Ever since The Last of Us teased its release on HBO Max and the first few episodes came out its gained lots of traction, love, and admiration from video game fans, and new fans. Many people have especially praised Pedro Pascal, not only for his performance as Joel but as a human being, and all of the prior roles he’s played. Many fans have found a strong love for Pedro, which he is amusingly aware of, and appreciate the love and support he is gaining by the day.
Bella has also received a good amount of love, but hate at the same time for not being the ideal cast as Ellie, though her triumphant performances as Ellie have proved her acting abilities to be captivating and well done. As the show progresses there are more intimate moments Bella Ramsey has that genuinely make watchers appreciate and bite back the words they have said about her performances. Many have even gone on to say that she was, “born for the role.”
March 12th released the season finale of The Last of Us. Many fans are upset to see the series go until the second season, but have found themselves content with HBO max and their accurate adaptation of the video game.
