Dave Grohl said Everlong was about “being connected to someone so much that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly.” This was said to invoke the feeling of real love. The song can invoke a swelling in tension by using sevenths and many suspended chords, then resolving them in the chorus. He wrote the song during the Christmas of 1996- one of the lowest points in his life. Grohl wrote this song for his girlfriend at the time, Louise Post, after breaking up with his wife, Jennifer Youngblood. This was said to be one of the first songs that fans would regularly quote back to him. Grohl, singing the line “breathe out, so I can breathe you in,” really stuck with his fans, as he would regularly hear this line sung back to him during his live performances.
