Sunrise on the Reaping is the newest addition to The Hunger Games book series by the talented author Suzanne Collins. Each book in the series contributes more to the depth of each character and pieces together information to the story line, leaving readers astonished. After reading Sunrise on the Reaping I can confidently say that it lives up to that standard.
The entire book is based on the character Haymitch Abernathy’s experience in the Hunger Games. In the original books, Haymitch was Katniss Everdeen’s mentor for the games. His role didn’t play much more into the story as it was focused on the main characters Katniss and Peeta. While this is true, there were interesting details that came to light when reading this new addition that takes place twenty four years before the start of the original trilogy. Haymitch was the second winner of the games from their underlying district, District Twelve. He won the fiftieth hunger games which was also the Second Quarter Quell, making the amount of tributes double the usual amount. This is especially impressive as he was only sixteen years old when he won his game.
What made this book so interesting to me was getting to learn so much more about characters with smaller roles in the original books. Not only do you get so many intriguing details about Haymitch, the book highlights characters like Beetee, Wires, and Mags. Countless times I received information on their characters and connected it to what I already knew from the prior books. This left me hooked and wanting to read more as these characters are well liked.
Overall Sunrise on the Reaping was a captivating read especially if you enjoy the previous books or movies. It allows readers to make shocking connections and get to know the extremely well loved character Haymitch on a deeper level. I think it was a nice addition to the series and added important information while also being an interesting read. If I were to rate it out of ten, I would give it a nine as I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
