“Guitar” was released on August 22nd, 2025 and is the sixth studio album released by Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco. For those unfamiliar with his work, Mac DeMarco is a very well-known indie musician, credited with the release of the 2012 album, “2,” the 2014 album, “Salad Days,” and especially the 2017 album, “This Old Dog.” In 2023 it was rumored that Mac DeMarco would retire from making music. After the release of his album, “One Wayne G,” he told reporters that, “After this tour, there’s nothing on the books. So who knows, maybe I’ll never be back.” However, on June 24th, 2025 Mac released a promotional single for “Guitar” titled, “Home.” Although it didn’t place on any active performance charts, it was well received by his audience. Following the release of the first promotional track, DeMarco released two more titled, “Holy” and “Phantom.” These songs were similar to “Home,” meaning they didn’t place very well on any charts. However, just days after the release of “Phantom,” DeMarco released “Guitar,” which peaked at 173rd on the “US Billboard 200,” and twenty-sixth on the “US Billboard Independent Albums.” This album, unlike previous albums by DeMarco, does not carry significant emotional baggage. Small amounts of it can be seen in songs such as “Home,” and “Shining,” but none of the songs contain deep thought or meaning. Composed of only twelve songs and taking up only thirty minutes, “Guitar” is a short and quick album. Nothing stands out about this album and it is generally thought to be a quick statement from DeMarco claiming, “I have nothing else to prove, so here’s some music.” Overall, I would give this album a 7/10.
My top three tracks:
1 – “Phantom”
2 – “Home”
3 – “Terror”
