The Factors of Stress Among Students

Hannah Burrows, Staff Writer

Stress can be caused by many different things and can have a huge effect on people. The school year is a time in which stress in students increases. A change in routine, trying to fit things into a schedule like homework, sports, work, family, friends, and even some difficult classes can cause stress among students.

Some students want to push themselves in school and try classes that seem like a challenge. Depending on the classes, there can be a lot of work and pressure, especially when a student takes multiple difficult classes. A lot of the time, students feel as if information is just thrown at them, and they aren’t really sure what to do with it, so they get stuck and frustrated. Most of those students understand that there are people that can help them with those things, however they don’t realize they need the help right away. AP courses can be a big challenge for some students, especially when taking more than one. The level of the class can already be a stressful thing for someone, but when you double that or even triple it, students might experience a lot of stress.

When summer ends and school starts up again, most students have to adapt to a different routine. Most students’ routines change during the summer and it can be hard to get back into their old routine for school. This can cause them to have trouble waking up or falling asleep. Most students either play a sport or have a job after school as well, which can take a lot out of their day. Some attempt to do both which can be a challenge trying to commit to so many different things. Students also have a social life outside of school. They need time to socialize. It’s a basic human necessity. Some people hang out with their friends after school or do something with their family, but the hard part is that they have to fit it into their day. Another thing they need to try to fit in is time to just relax, whether that’s taking a relaxing shower, sleeping or just doing something that they enjoy. It’s really hard fitting so many things into one day.

Arguments and fighting can also be an extremely stressful thing for many people. Fighting with parents or siblings before school could cause them to be stressed for the rest of their day.

Although all these things are going on in people’s lives, there’s always a way to lower stress levels. People need to be in the moment and not worry about things that they have to do later in the day. If stress levels rise during a test, before a game, or while trying to fall asleep, just stop what you’re doing, take deep breaths, and take a moment to realize what needs to be done. A lot of times it can be hard for people to do these techniques to decrease stress, but they can find ways to improve the stress level for themselves.
